The Athletics’ injury list continues to grow.
The A’s placed standout rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz on the 10-day injured list with a right thumb strain, adding another key contributor to a roster already dealing with a lengthy list of injuries.
Kurtz was evaluated by Dr. Steve Shin in Los Angeles and diagnosed with an acute-on-chronic volar plate tear of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint in his right thumb.

According to the Athletics, Nick Kurtz is scheduled to undergo an ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection and will not participate in baseball activities for the time being.
The timing couldn’t be much worse for the A’s, as Kurtz had become one of the club’s most productive hitters during the second half. His absence leaves another significant hole in a lineup that has already been without several key contributors throughout a difficult stretch.

There was at least one encouraging development on the position-player side.
Utility infielder Zack Gelof is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas on Tuesday night after recovering from a right knee laceration. If all goes well, Gelof could soon provide a much-needed boost to the Athletics’ infield.
Center fielder Denzel Clarke also continues to make progress while rehabbing his left hamstring strain. Clarke is working through running, throwing and hitting progressions in Arizona this week, though the club has not yet announced plans for a rehab assignment.
The Athletics also provided updates on several pitchers.
Jeffrey Springs, who landed on the injured list with right hip discomfort, underwent an MRI that showed no acute injury. The left-hander has been dealing with fatigue in his hip but is expected to restart a throwing program later this week.
Right-hander Luis Severino continues progressing through a throwing program as he works his way back from a right shoulder strain, while Justin Sterner has also begun a throwing progression during his recovery from right knee chondromalacia.

Reliever Brooks Kriske is scheduled to throw live batting practice in Arizona on Wednesday, marking another step in his recovery from a right shoulder impingement.
The Athletics also announced that Shea Langeliers underwent successful right knee surgery on July 28. Dr. Banffy performed a medial meniscectomy and patellofemoral chondroplasty, and Langeliers has already begun his rehabilitation in Sacramento.
Meanwhile, Mark Leiter Jr. underwent surgery to repair a right hip labral tear and has officially been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer remains sidelined following surgery to repair a testicle rupture suffered earlier this month and has not yet resumed baseball activities. Right-hander Gunnar Hoglund also remains out for the season after undergoing left hip surgery in May, while slugger Brent Rooker continues his recovery after left knee surgery earlier this month.
With Kurtz now joining an already lengthy injured list, the Athletics continue searching for healthy contributors as injuries remain one of the defining storylines of their 2026 season.
