Kubiak: 49ers’ Offense getting boost from McCaffrey, Kittle returns

The San Francisco 49ers are entering the final week of the preseason with several important offensive competitions still taking shape.

Following Thursday’s 41-17 win over the Los Angeles Chargers, offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak provided updates on the running back room, left guard competition, and the return of several key players.

With Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle back at practice, Kubiak said their presence has already made an impact on the entire offense.

“It definitely just gives us energy,” Kubiak said on Sunday. “You got two Hall of Fame caliber players out there who are back out there and getting their work in. They practice at a high standard, and they lift everybody up.”

Kittle’s return is particularly important as the 49ers prepare for the regular season opener against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 10 in Australia. Kubiak acknowledged that San Francisco has different offensive plans depending on Kittle’s availability, given his unique skill set.

“George is unique. George is one of a kind,” Kubiak said. “There aren’t many players who can do what he can do.”

The 49ers still have one preseason game remaining, with Thursday’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders providing another opportunity for players to make their case before the roster is finalized.

One of the more intriguing competitions is at left guard, where Connor Colby, Carver Willis and Austen Pleasants have rotated throughout camp. Kubiak said there is still no decision on who will start Week 1.

“It’s still a competition,” Kubiak said. “Someone’s going to come out of that thing starting Week 1. I think I said this last week, but we’re going to need them all.”

The running back room also received a boost from the return of Jordan James, while rookie Kaelon Black impressed in his first NFL action against the Chargers. Black rushed with physicality and showed an ability to contribute in pass protection, earning praise from Kubiak.

“I loved how he ran. He really brought kind of a spark to our offense,” Kubiak said.

James is expected to receive significant opportunities against Las Vegas as he continues working his way into the rotation.

Kubiak said the 49ers don’t necessarily need to settle on one definitive backup to McCaffrey, either. The plan could involve multiple backs receiving opportunities throughout the season.

“We’d like to get those guys carries,” Kubiak said. “If you can get multiple backs touches in a game, that’s a sign that you’re running the ball well.”

With the Raiders up next, Kubiak also highlighted the performances of offensive linemen Drake Nugent and Doug Kramer Jr., who will have another chance to strengthen their cases Thursday.

“Another big week for them against the Raiders to see how they play,” Kubiak said.
