The San Francisco 49ers came into Week Two with a clear talent advantage over their opponent, the Miami Dolphins. Despite a quieter first half than anticipated, the 49ers blew the game open with 21 points in the third quarter en route to a 35-13 win.

Quarterback Brock Purdy looked phenomenal in the home opener, completing 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards and two touchdowns while adding another on the ground. George Kittle led the way with 80 receiving yards and his first touchdown of the season, while Christian McCaffrey found the end zone twice to reach 100 career touchdowns.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Miami Dolphins Game Notes

San Francisco’s Eddy Pineiro kicked off the action to the visiting Dolphins. Running back De’Von Achane is the centerpiece of Miami’s offense, and that was apparent early as he got involved both on the ground and in the passing game.

Quarterback Malik Willis found DJ Herman for an 18-yard reception before Fred Warner did what he does best and forced his second fumble in as many games. The 49ers were unable to recover as the ball rolled out of bounds.

Stopped at the 33-yard line, Dolphins kicker Riley Patterson missed a 51-yard field goal wide right, giving the 49ers the ball back with 10:28 to play. From there, San Francisco looked like the more talented roster.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan got plenty of players involved as Deebo Samuel and Demarcus Robinson caught passes on the first two plays. Christian McCaffrey received a majority of the rushes on the opening drive, with rookie Kaelon Black getting two touches as well after being named available with a groin injury not long before kickoff.

Purdy used his legs to avoid the rush and rolled out to his right on a big third down before finding Mike Evans falling out of bounds for a 10-yard first-down reception.

A short pass to McCaffrey went for 16 yards and left the 49ers at the one-yard line. Two plays later, McCaffrey recorded his first rushing touchdown of the season to give San Francisco a 7-0 lead.

Miami continued to lean on Achane and found some success on the ground, including a 17-yard run. The Dolphins eventually worked their way down to the San Francisco six-yard line, but the 49ers managed three straight stops to force a field goal. Patterson connected from 28 yards to make it 7-3.

Continuing to show off his mobility and feel, Purdy opened the next possession with a 10-yard scramble. San Francisco continued spreading the ball around, and Robinson hauled in a 19-yard reception that took the 49ers down to the four-yard line.

Robinson had room to keep going but couldn’t finish the play before being helped off the field. The team later announced that the receiver was questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Purdy scrambled the final two yards into the end zone a few plays later, giving San Francisco a 14-3 lead.

Miami again leaned heavily on Achane over the final five minutes of the half. A 23-yard reception to Malik Washington moved the Dolphins to the edge of the red zone, but an offensive holding penalty and a few key stops held Miami to another field goal.

Leading 14-6 at halftime, Purdy had 73 passing yards and 30 rushing yards, while Achane’s 61 yards on 14 attempts led the other side. San Francisco felt in control up to that point, but had yet to pull away. Robinson was announced as out for the second half at the break.

It didn’t take long into the second half for that to change. George Kittle, who didn’t have a reception in the first half, got things started with a 40-yard completion on the first play of the half. A few plays later, Purdy found Kittle for a 12-yard touchdown and his first score of the season.

Holding Miami to a three-and-out on the following possession gave them another chance to continue extending the lead. Purdy remained the star of the afternoon for San Francisco’s offense, with a highlight play that included a convincing pass fake before rolling out and finding Evans for an explosive play just short of the end zone.

Shanahan continued spreading the ball around from there. Purdy found fullback Kyle Juszczyk for a six-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 28-6 as the Dolphins struggled to find any answer for San Francisco’s offense.

The 49ers kept adding to their tally from there. Another one-yard McCaffrey touchdown gave San Francisco its third score of the quarter and turned what had been an eight-point halftime advantage into a 35-6 blowout. The three third-quarter touchdowns came from Kittle, Juszczyk and McCaffrey as San Francisco quickly removed any doubt that remained at halftime.

Miami’s offense spent most of the afternoon settling for field goals or struggling to sustain drives, while San Francisco’s defense kept pressuring Willis. The 49ers recorded four sacks and kept the Dolphins out of the end zone until the game was already decided.

Willis eventually found Ryan Miller for a 77-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter, cutting the final margin to 35-13. It was Miami’s only touchdown of the afternoon and came after San Francisco had already built a 29-point advantage.

The 49ers improved to 2-0 after outscoring the Rams and Dolphins 62-20 through their first two games.

Purdy’s final numbers stood out most. He completed 20 of 22 passes for 287 yards, two passing touchdowns and no interceptions, while rushing three times for 30 yards and another touchdown.

Kittle caught all four of his targets for 80 yards and a score after going without a reception in the first half. McCaffrey scored twice on the ground, giving him 100 touchdowns for his career, while San Francisco’s defense held Miami to six points through the first three quarters.

The only notable negative came with another injury to the receiver room. Robinson did not return after suffering the ankle injury in the second quarter, adding another name to a position group already missing De’Zhaun Stribling and Ricky Pearsall.

San Francisco now stays home for another week, with the Arizona Cardinals coming to Levi’s Stadium in Week Three.
