UC Davis football bounced back in a big way Saturday night, using a dominant offensive performance to defeat Eastern Washington 49-38 and improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big Sky play.
UC Davis head coach Tim Plough joined The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross to break down the win and what his team needs to accomplish during the bye week.
Plough was particularly pleased with how quickly the Aggies started. UC Davis scored touchdowns on each of its first two drives, while the defense consistently pressured Eastern Washington quarterback.
“We started fast, which we haven’t really done all year,” Plough said. “Scored on the first two drives, and defensively we put a lot of pressure on the quarterback.”
The Aggies recorded six sacks and 10 quarterback hits, marking their first six-sack game in three years.

Offensively, the biggest difference was the success in the run game. Plough credited the offensive line and wide receivers for creating opportunities for Fisher and the rest of the rushing attack.
“You need all 10 guys to block, not just the five up front,” Plough said. “I feel like that led to some big plays for sure.”
Fisher’s performance was a major highlight, but Plough knows UC Davis will need to maintain balance moving forward.
“That’s just what he’s capable of,” Plough said. “We just got to continue to get that going so that we can keep some balance offensively.”
Despite the offensive fireworks, Plough acknowledged there is still plenty to clean up defensively. Eastern Washington ran 94 plays compared to just 58 for UC Davis, making third-down defense a major area of emphasis.
“We got to figure out a way to get off the field on critical downs,” Plough said.
The bye week gives UC Davis an opportunity to address those issues while also getting healthier. Plough said the Aggies will use the extra time to fix something in all three phases, prepare for their next opponent and give veteran players some much-needed rest.
“We haven’t played really well off of buys since I’ve been here,” Plough said. “If you give us an extra week to prepare, we should play well.”
