The 49ers are 6-0, but ESPN reporter Nick Wagoner says Mike Evans’ Achilles injury could force San Francisco to weigh immediate help at wide receiver against patience as injured players work toward returning.
Wagoner joined Sactown Sports’ The Matt & Kayla Show to discuss the team’s defense, Evans’ status and whether the 49ers should make a trade. Evans left Monday’s 23-17 win over Washington with Achilles tendonitis after catching three passes for 94 yards, including a 54-yard reception.
Wagoner said San Francisco doesn’t view the injury as significant right now, but the risk is that pushing Evans through it could make it worse. With a short week before the Atlanta game and a bye to follow, the 49ers have a difficult decision.
“The concern is that if you push this, then does it lead to something bigger?” Wagoner said. “That’s what they’re trying to avoid.”

Wagoner said Evans has a history of playing through issues and missing practice, but the team will need to manage him as the season continues. He added that a compromised Evans should not be on the field just for the sake of having him available.
Evans’ absence coincided with Washington turning up the pressure. Wagoner said the Commanders blitzed on 20% of their first-half plays and 70% in the second half, taking away quick options and making life harder for Brock Purdy and the offense.
“Who can you throw the ball to when there’s an extra man? Who’s there when you read hot and just want to get the ball out? It’s Mike Evans,” Wagoner said.
The 49ers managed just three points after halftime and went three-and-out on their final three possessions. Wagoner said penalties also put the offense in difficult down-and-distance situations, while San Francisco could use a full week of preparation to better define roles for its other playmakers.
That could mean more designed touches for Christian McCaffrey, who lined up in the slot, and continued involvement for tight end George Kittle. Wagoner said the team’s current receiver injuries make a trade more compelling, though he does not expect an immediate move.
“You can’t operate in a world where you expect to get everybody back and then just believe that they’re going to stay back,” Wagoner said.

He said San Francisco could consider either a major acquisition or a veteran on an expiring contract. With the trade deadline still weeks away and the bye approaching, the team has time to reassess its options and the health of its receivers.
Wagoner also praised the 49ers’ defense, particularly the secondary’s more aggressive approach under coordinator Raheem Morris. He said the coverage has helped generate pressure from multiple players, with 11 defenders recording at least half a sack.
