The San Francisco 49ers were leading 30-23 with 1:55 left in the game and played just well enough to defeat the Green Bay Packers but then Aaron Rodgers took over as he’s done so many times before.

After a three play drive that resulted in -12 yards, the 49ers punted the ball back to Rodgers and the Packers offense with 2:39 remaining in the game and the ball at the Green Bay 42 yard-line. It took just one play for the Packers to get in the redzone after Rodgers find Davante Adams on a 38 yard pass to get the ball to the San Francisco 20. Two plays later, Rodgers tied the game connecting with Adams on a 16-yard touchdown pass that was perfectly placed by the former MVP.

The 49ers got the ball back and after a 32-yard return from Richie James plus an extra 15 yards from an unnecessary roughness, the 49ers were set up at their own 47 yard-line but the drive lasted just three plays. After a 7-yard pass from CJ Beathard to George Kittle and an incomplete pass intended for Pierre Garcon, the 49ers had a 3rd-and-3 with 1:13 left in the game. The Packers sent six rushers towards Beathard who threw the ball down to the 15 yard-line to be intercepted by Kevin King. From there, it was the Aaron Rodgers show.

With the help of a illegal contact penalty from Richard Sherman on a 3rd-and-15 from the Green Bay 19 yard-line, it took Rodgers nine plays to drive the Packers offense 81 yards to set Mason Crosby up for a game-winning 27-yard field goal, giving the Packers a 33-30 win.

On the final drive of the game, Rodgers completed three of six pass for 46 yards but also had a 21-yard run to get the Packers to their own 45 yard-line. Rodgers finished the night 25-46 with 425 yards and two touchdowns, both to Davante Adams.

Quick hits

  • The 49ers ran the ball well all night against the ninth-best run defense in the NFL. They rushed the ball a total 30 times for a total of 174 yards. Matt Breida got the most carries by a 49er with 14 carries for 61 yards and Raheem Mostert rushed for 87 yards on 12 carries.
  • San Francisco turned the ball over three times, one interception and two fumbles while their defense didn’t force a single turnover. Their turnover margin now sits at a league-worst -11.
  • Green Bay converted just four of 13 third downs in the game. Of those 13 third downs, just five of them were less than ten yards to go.

Next week

The now 1-5 49ers will return to Santa Clara to take on the lone undefeated team in the NFL Los Angeles Rams on not Sunday Night Football. Kick-off is scheduled for 1:25 pm PST.
