A’s Swept By Red Sox, Winless On Road Trip

To say it’s been a rough go for the Athletics on their current nine-game road trip would be an understatement.
After being swept by the Blue Jays over the weekend, the A’s followed up by being swept by the Boston Red Sox at Fenway. Oakland is now 0-6 on the road trip which coincides with their six-game losing streak.
Monday: Red Sox 9, Athletics 4
WP: Ryan Brasier (1-0, 1.32 ERA), LP: Frankie Montas (4-2, 2.97), SV: Matt Barnes (2)
The series started off well for Oakland with a four-run second inning. Jurickson Profar knocked in two runs with a single which was followed by a wild pitch and a Josh Phegley single that drove in Profar. Matt Chapman then hit his seventh double of the season to drive in Phegley for the A’s fourth run of the inning. That would be the last run they scored on the night.
The Red Sox came back with a six-run third inning which turn the game around. Montas allowed eight hits and seven runs, one earned, in four and a third innings pitched and suffered his second loss of the season.
Tuesday: Red Sox 5, Athletics 1
WP: Rick Porcello (2-3, 5.52), LP: Aaron Brooks (2-3, 5.74)
The starting pitching struggled against, this time being Brooks, allowing four earned runs in four and a third innings, including two home runs allowed to Mookie Betts and Mitch Moreland.
Oakland’s lone run came in the ninth inning on Robbie Grossman’s third home run of the season.
Wednesday: Red Sox 7, Athletics 3
WP: Marcus Waldon (4-0, 1.65), LP: Mike Fiers (2-3, 6.81)
Fiers put in the best start of the series for Oakland but that still wasn’t enough to avoid a sweep. Moreland hit his second home run of the series and two sacrifice flies gave Boston a 3-1 lead after five innings.
The A’s ran into trouble in the sixth inning when the Red Sox totaled three hits, drew three walks, and scored three runs on singles from Tzu-Wei Lin and Andrew Benintendi. The A’s made it close in the ninth with two runs on doubles from Khris Davis and Chad Pinder.
Oakland falls to 14-19 on the season, which puts them in last place in the American League West. The A’s end their road trip in Pittsburgh for a three-game set over the weekend against the Pirates.
