Bob Melvin put the finishing touches on his coaching staff, adding managerial experience to the San Francisco Giants bench.

Matt Williams and Bryan Price are two former major league managers joining the San Francisco Giants’ coaching staff in 2024.

Price, 61, joins the organization as a pitching coach after spending the last two seasons with Melvin in San Diego as the Padres senior advisor to major league staff. Previously a manager of the Cincinnati Reds from 2014-18, Price has three decades of coaching experience at the major league level. He’s had stints with the Seattle Mariners (2000-2005), Arizona Diamondbacks (2006-2009), Reds (2010-2013), and Philadelphia Phillies (2020). In 2007, Price was named the Major League Coach of the Year by “Baseball America.”

Williams, 57, joins the Giants coaching staff as their third base coach. The former Giant from 1986-96 previously worked with Melvin in Oakland and San Deigo. He was named the NL Manager of the Year in 2014 after leading the Washington Nationals to a 96-66 record, the best record in the National League. However, his National would lose in the NL Division Series to eventual World Series winners and his new team, the San Francisco Giants.

In a Zoom call with reporters, Bob Melvin said Williams was an easy hire because “he’s always considered himself a Giant.”

Woodland native Alyssa Nakken remains on staff, along with several returning coaches and promotions from the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Sacramento River Cats.

“In addition, Mark Hallberg, who has spent the previous four seasons on the Major League coaching staff, and the last two as the club’s Third Base Coach, will move to First Base Coach in 2024. Justin Viele returns for his fifth season as the Hitting Coach,” the Giants said in a press release. “Pedro Guerrero will return for his third season at the Assistant Hitting Coach. J.P. Martinez will enter his fourth season as the team’s Assistant Pitching Coach. And Taira Uematsu will embark on his third season as an Assistant Coach on the Giants’ Major League coaching staff.”
