Despite a lackluster 2024 season, the San Francisco Giants have managed to keep Matt Chapman for the long haul.

The Giants announced late Wednesday evening that they had agreed to terms with star third baseman Matt Chapman on a six-year contract extension. The deal keeps him in The Bay Area through 2030, with reports indicating it is a six-year, $151 million deal. Chapman’s final two years of his current contract are replaced with this new extension, keeping him from opting out after this season.

The Giants made the announcement first, with ESPN’s Jeff Passan providing details thereafter.

More on Matt Chapman

Chapman has been the San Francisco Giants’ best player this season, posting a team-leading 6.0 Wins Above Replacement amid a strong year on both sides of the diamond.

Over 129 games, Chapman has hit 22 home runs (leads team), 69 RBI (leads team), and a .248 batting average while ranking among league leaders in defensive runs saved at third base.

The veteran third baseman recently spoke highly of the Giants organization, stating that he was open to extension talks.

“The Giants, I love being here, and they know that I want to be here,” Chapman said two weeks ago in an interview with The Mercury News’ Evan Webeck. “They know that I’m open to that. I’m kind of just waiting on them.”

Well, the wait is over for Chapman, who will now man the hot-corner in San Francisco for years to come.
