Brock Purdy and the San Francisco 49ers are on a hot streak right now, winning their first five regular-season games of the 2023 NFL season. Despite that, they’re still focused as ever on beating the best week in and week out, with their next test coming in Cleveland.
Although the 49ers have put up 30 points or more in each game in 2023, Purdy isn’t taking it easy with the Browns.
The Browns have rejuvenated their defense this season under Jim Schwartz, ranking in the top three of most defensive metrics. In fact, they are ahead of the 49ers in points allowed (60) and rushing yards allowed (287).
And while Cleveland’s offense will likely be without starting quarterback Deshaun Watson Sunday, their defense still presents one of the toughest challenges in the NFL.
“Yeah, really good challenge for us. Up front, they do a great job with, I feel like just getting after the offensive line and pushing them back and getting up on the quarterback’s toes,” Brock Purdy said. “They do a great job of that.”

The Browns do such a good job of getting pressure that they remind him of the 49ers defense to a degree.
Cleveland uses all-world pass rushers Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith in various looks throughout the game, keeping opposing offenses wary at all times. That’s similar to what Purdy has faced going against his own defense, expecting another big test against one of the league’s best.
“In camp we did go against that [type of defense] every day,” the QB added. “We got another challenge in front of us this week with these guys. So they’re, I think one of the best in the league and a really talented group. So, excited to go against them.”
That fire to succeed comes from his own personal vendetta to prove himself every day. Sure, being the last pick in the draft plays a factor, but it’s the potential of his own, and the team’s, abilities that drives him the most.
And while he doesn’t know if the offense will ever have that “perfect game”, he sure as hell is going to keep trying to achieve that each week for the 49ers.
“No matter what everyone else is saying man, I know that there is another level that I can get to,” Brock Purdy stated.
