Brodie Brazil, NBC Sports California host, joined Chris & Co. with Jason Ross Friday to discuss the latest news surrounding the Oakland Athletics relocation, what’s happening in the Las Vegas legislature, if the team could be sold and more
The A’s announced earlier this year that they’ve signed a binding purchase agreement for 49 acres of land in Las Vegas, where the eventual home of a new team stadium could be built. The $1.5 billion, 35,000-seat stadium would include a retractable roof, and house events outside of baseball. The Las Vegas Review-Journal noted in its story if all goes well for the organization, crews could break ground on the new stadium in 2024. But, the keyword there is, if everything goes well.
“It really does feel like if they [Las Vegas] can come up with $500 million of public money, I don’t see how the A’s stay in Oakland. That is all entirely up to them. Now it’s a long and winding process. It requires the money approval, it requires all of this happening in the next 30 days with the legislative session in Nevada that’s going on in Carson City or a special session. But again it requires a vote, it requires public commentary on this, it also requires MLB owner approval. We’ll see if they waive the relocation fee. But I’m here to say if they hit this shot…it could be over for Oakland.”
Topics discussed included:
- Comparing the Oakland situation to the Kings and Warriors’ first-round series
- The timing of the Vegas announcement
- In the A’s land deal, the team can back out of the agreement if they don’t get $500 million in tax credits
- What influence could Raiders’ owner Mark Davis have in keeping the Oakland Athletics out of Las Vegas
- “There is never going to be a Rob Manfred Way in Oakland.”
- Is there any possibility the John Fisher sells the team?
- Any there any positive takeaways from the A’s on-field product?
