The San Francisco Giants slimmed down their roster Wednesday, optioning infielders Casey Schmitt and David Villar to Triple-A Sacramento.
San Francisco also announced in a press release that pitchers Spencer Bivens and Cody Stashak have been sent to minor league camps.
Schmitt struggled to stand out for the San Francisco Giants during spring training, going 3 for 26 during spring training. The 25-year-old San Diego native made his big league debut last season, but when the team signed Nick Ahmed, a two-time Gold Glove winner, earlier this offseason Schmitt’s chances at becoming the opening-day starting shortstop decreased.
Marco Luciano, San Francisco’s number-two prospect (39th on MLB’s top-100 prospect list for 2024), is in line to begin the season as the franchise’s first everyday shortstop following Brandon Crawford’s exit to St. Louis.
Schmitt is expected to move around the infield while with the Sacramento River Cats.
