The last time the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers faced off was just about a year ago, in the Wild Card of the 2021 playoffs.
In that game, the Niners won a close game, 23-17, but it was the closing moments of the game that stood out. Quarterback Dak Prescott was bumped by an official while running to the line in an effort to quickly spike the ball. Prescott snapped the ball, but after the game clock expired.
“That’s a scar, that one hurts and that’ll hurt for the rest of my career,” Prescott said following Monday’s win against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “It’ll be a motivation throughout my career, just to make sure I’m preparing the right way, leaving no doubt in the preparation… DeMarcus [Lawrence] said it early in the week in the leadership meeting, this thing is setup just for us, playing teams that have beat us, teams that we’re familiar with. So it’s important for us now, as I said, to capitalize on this preparation, take it one day at a time and make sure we’re ready to go as we work for this one.”
The Cowboys quarterback says he has confidence in his team, adding they’ll have to “start fast and get on top of them.”

Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said after the team’s win they won’t look for a new kicker. During Monday night’s matchup between the Dallas Cowboy and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, kicker Brett Maher missed four extra point attempts. According to NFL Research on Twitter, those four misses were the first time since 1932, when the statistic first started being tracked, that a player missed that many extra points in either a regular or postseason game.
“We need Brett, he understands that,” McCarthy said. “So we need to get back on it this week and you know, get him ready to go. Obviously, we’re kicking in an outdoor stadium out there in Santa Clara…He’s disappointed, but we need him. We need him to focus in. He’s been super clutch for us all year, so that’s the plan.”
