Oakland A’s outfielder Esteury Ruiz has six games remaining to make history.

In Sunday’s 2-0 shutout loss to the Detroit Tigers, Ruiz stole his 64th and 65th bases for the A’s, moving the speedy outfielder within one of tying Kenny Lofton’s AL record for rookies of 66 set in 1992. Ruiz singled in the first and stole second before getting caught trying to swipe third. He then doubled in the fourth and then was part of a double steal with

The Oakland A’s finish their season on the road, first visiting the Minnesota Twins for a three-game series then concluding the 2023 season in Los Angeles for a three-game series against the Angels.

While many may look to Lofton’s record, this is the first time an A’s player has stolen over 60 bases in a season since Rickey Henderson did it in 1998. If he plays a full season next year, he may have a shot at reaching the A’s franchise record of 130 steals this season, which was set by Rickey Henderson in 1982.

Esteury Ruiz made the franchise record books earlier this season when he broke a 46-year-old franchise rookie steal record that was previously set by Mitchell Page in 1977.
