There haven’t been a lot of bright spots for the Oakland A’s this season, but Esteury Ruiz is doing his best to help fans be optimistic about the future.
In Sunday’s 6-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox, Ruiz did something no other A’s player has done in the history of the franchise. After breaking up a no-hitter in the sixth inning with a single to left field, he stole second and then third. His 51st and 52nd stolen bases.
“He’s a weapon Any time he gets on base, he’s a threat to steal and to score,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said after Sunday’s game.

He made the franchise record books earlier this season when he broke a 46-year-old franchise rookie steal record that was previously set by Mitchell Page in 1977.
With 31 games left on the schedule, Esteury Ruiz could still break Kenny Lofton’s American League rookie record of 66 which was set in 1992. However, it’s unlikely he will break the A’s franchise record of 130 steals, which was set by Rickey Henderson in 1982.
