Fans in attendance for the Sacramento River Cats home opener Tuesday were treated to a special surprise, Fernando Tatis Jr. playing in a Triple-A game.
The San Diego Padres star is in the middle of a 15-game rehab assignment with the El Paso Chihuahuas following surgeries last year to his wrist and shoulder. He’s expected to return to the Padres on April 20.
Tatis, who participated in spring training for the Padres, was also suspended for 80 games last August after testing positive for PEDs.
On Tuesday night, Tatis played right field for the Chihuahuas. He ended the night 1-for-2 with an RBI, two walks drawn and a run scored.

According to MLB.com, Padres manager Mob Melvin said Tatis is expected to play Wednesday night before getting a day off Thursday for the Chihuahuas.
“By the time he gets back here, we expect him to be a full-go, just like anybody else.”
The Padres are off Wednesday and return to action Thursday in Atlanta against the Braves. San Francisco, the major league affiliate of the River Cats, is still on the road, working its way home from the East Coast for its home opener Friday against the Kansas City Royals.
