A fan favorite in Oakland is joining the A’s division rivals. The Seattle Mariners announced this week they’ve added former Oakland Athletics catcher Stephen Vogt to its coaching team. Vogt will serve as the team’s bullpen and quality control coach.
Vogt, a fan favorite in Oakland, was a member of the A’s for six of his 10 years in the league. The 37-year-old catcher debuted with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012 before joining the A’s the following season. During his time in Oakland, he was voted to the All-Star game twice in 2015 and 2016 while hitting .247.
Fans got behind Vogt quickly in Oakland, lamenting him with his own chant, “I believe in Stephen Vogt!”
Vogt hit a home run in what turned out to be his last at-bat as a player.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Vogt said he’s excited to join the organization and start his major league coaching career.
“This next chapter of my career is one I am ready for and thrilled to be beginning in Seattle,” Vogt told AP.
“With the addition of Stephen Vogt and a new role for Trent in 2023, we are well equipped to build on the winning foundation we have established here. I love working with this group, and I can’t wait to get rolling again at Spring Training,” manager Scott Servais said in a statement on the Mariners’ website.
