Wednesday has been a bit of a whirlwind at 49ers’ HQ, with the team having defensive captain Fred Waner answer questions about their quarterback situation.
After reports of Sam Darnold becoming the San Francisco 49ers’ backup quarterback emerged, many began to speculate what the future holds for Trey Lance. The situation worsened further when the latter QB wasn’t seen on the practice field for the first time since training camp opened. One of the more shocking developments in recent memories for the 49ers, even players were left in the dark Wednesday, including Warner.
The 49ers’ All-Pro linebacker was candid about the predicament, unsure of what the future holds for both the player and the franchise.
“I mean, honestly, I don’t know much about the situation, like, complete honesty,” Fred Warner told the media Wednesday. “I came out to practice, I saw there were only three quarterbacks out there, Trey’s not out there. So, I mean, I’m trying to ask around, what’s going on. There’s not a clear answer right now.”
What’s more surprising is the timing of the news, with coach Kyle Shanahan stating 24 hours prior that the team could alternate both players in the backup role in the regular season.
That isn’t the case though.
San Francisco now seems determined to move off the former third-overall pick at the time, leaving his teammates in limbo as they prepare for a game in two days.
“Obviously, love Trey. I don’t know what’s going on with him right now. Or what’s going to be next, but, we just got to keep preparing. We have a game on Friday, keep preparing towards the Pittsburgh [game], getting better. But with the QB stuff, I’m honestly not even sure what exactly is going on,” Warner said.

As for the gunslingers that were present, newly-appointed backup Sam Darnold has done enough to cement his place on the depth chart.
While only joining the 49ers a few months ago, the former third-overall pick has developed steadily in Kyle Shanahan’s offense, impressing Fred Warner as well.
“Yeah, Sam’s looked good. I’ve really liked how he’s progressed. I think obviously being a veteran at the position, the arm talent is insane, obviously that was a reason why he was drafted as high as he was back when me and him both came out in [2018]. I think he’s a good, I think he’s continued to get better every day,” Warner stated.
