High School Showcase: Roseville Starts Title Defense 2-0

Roseville HC Adam Reinking joins the High School Showcase to discuss the Tigers’ 2-0 start, key players and the strength of local football.

High school football season is nearly here, bringing Friday night games back to schools all throughout the Sacramento region. With plenty of potential future NFL and collegiate talent, there’s plenty to watch locally.

Sactown Sports is expanding its coverage of the local high school football scene with the ‘Sactown Sports High School Showcase’, a weekly feature highlighting some of the top teams, players, and matchups from around the area. Each week, The Drive Guys with Whitey Gleason and Allen Stiles will be joined by a reporter, coach, or another voice connected to the local football scene to get the latest insight.

For this week’s edition of the High School Showcase, The Drive Guys were joined by Roseville High head football coach Adam Reinking, whose Tigers are off to a 2-0 start after winning their first Sac-Joaquin Section championship since 1987 last season.

Roseville’s latest win was a hard-fought battle against Oakmont. The Tigers trailed Oakmont by 17 points late in the third quarter before rallying for a 35-31 victory. Senior quarterback Hunter Felkins helped lead the comeback, throwing for around 260 yards in the second half with three touchdowns while also running in a score.

“Hunter carried us to a win last week,” Reinking said. “He did a phenomenal job.”

For Reinking, the comeback also gave him an early chance to learn how his group responded to first-half adversity.

“What type of character do we have?” Reinking recalled asking his team. “Are we gonna pack up and go and be upset and point fingers, or are we just gonna man up, be mentally tough, and go out there and do the stuff that we practice?”

That toughness also shows up in senior Mateo Martinez, one of Roseville’s captains and a two-way contributor at running back and linebacker. Reinking called Martinez “a stud” while praising his versatility, work ethic and physicality.

Tests will continue coming for Reinking’s team as they play high-quality opponents week in and week out.

Roseville faces West Park next before taking on Woodcreek, part of a schedule filled with nearby programs that Reinking believes offer plenty of quality competition.

He said he takes pride in scheduling games close to home and pointed to West Park, Woodcreek, Whitney, Twelve Bridges, Placer and Nevada Union as he discussed the strength of football in the area.

“North of Highway 50 is really good football,” Reinking said.

That local competition should give Roseville plenty of tests as the defending Division IV champions begin another run through the season.
