Week 1 of the preseason didn’t go to plan for the 49ers, losing badly to the Las Vegas Raiders, 34-7. Returning to Santa Clara, the team will look to get back in the win column Saturday.
The San Francisco 49ers will host their second preseason contest of 2023, with the Denver Broncos rolling into town. Both teams are coming off a loss in their preseason openers, wanting to rebound as quickly as possible.
One player in particular that needs a good showing is quarterback Trey Lance.
The third-year QB had a rough day against the Raiders, getting sacked four times in the first half. Struggling to look comfortable in the pocket, the national media has ridiculed the 23-year-old for his most recent performance.
But if you ask the team, he’s held the same demeanor regardless of the outside noise.

“Trey is extremely smart and very socially aware,” coach Kyle Shanahan said about Lance Wednesday. “He knows how the world works. So he does his best, which I think he does a damn good job of, trying to block that out and focus on getting better, and I think that’s what he’s done so far.”
What time does the preseason game start?
Kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. PST on Saturday, Aug. 19th, at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Who’s starting?
49ers quarterback Sam Darnold is expected to start the team’s second preseason game against the Denver Broncos. Darnold will play the first half of Saturday’s contest, and fellow QB Trey Lance will play most of the second half.
This switch comes after Lance started the first preseason game, struggling mightily in the first half.
However, coach Kyle Shanahan said on KNBR Thursday that quarterback Brock Purdy and the rest of the starters could play Saturday. The first team would only play a series or two, according to the coach, allowing the backups to play the majority of the game.
Fellow backup Brandon Allen could see come action in the fourth quarter as well.
Where can I watch the game?
The game will air live locally on CBS 13, while it will also air nationally on NFL Network.
