The San Francisco 49ers showed out on primetime, whopping the Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. They now take their talents on the road, with a rainy-day game in Cleveland on the horizon.
The 49ers are 5-0 to start the 2023 NFL season, their best start to a new year in more than 30 years. Defeating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, 42-10, the Red & Gold continue their march through the regular season as one of the league’s best.
But could that march be halted this week, when they faced the Cleveland Browns on the road.
The 49ers and Browns are two franchises of historic significance, both staples in their respective conferences. This season is no different, with both squads boasting a elite defense. But the Browns keeping up on offense could be the key to the matchup, as starting quarterback Deshaun Watson has been ruled out for Week 6.
Both franchises have met only 20 times over the years, with Cleveland leading the series at 12-8 all-time. The 49ers got the best of them most recently however, dominating the Browns, 31-3, back in 2019.
But that’s in the past, with the Red & Gold taking each week one at a time this season. And while the Browns won’t have some of their starters out there, the 49ers aren’t taking them lightly, especially their defense.
“Yeah, really good challenge for us. Up front, they do a great job with, I feel like just getting after the offensive line and pushing them back and getting up on the quarterback’s toes,” 49ers QB Brock Purdy said Thursday. “They do a great job of that.
“We got another challenge in front of us this week with these guys. So they’re, I think one of the best in the league and a really talented group. So, excited to go against them.”
