Another week, another win for the San Francisco 49ers. The Red & Gold extended their winning streak to five last Sunday, defeating the Miami Dolphins 33-17.
But now with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo likely done for the season, all eyes turn to rookie QB Brock Purdy, hoping he can bridge the way to another postseason run. To to that, he’ll first need to outplay Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
In Brady’s only appearance against the 49ers in the Bay, he went for 280 passing yards and four touchdowns in a 2016 rout over the Red & Gold. In current team however, has struggled against San Francisco, down in the all-time series 18 to 7. The pair’s last matchup came in 2019, the 49ers emerged with the win, 31-17.
Despite an even record go 6-6 so far, San Francisco is very aware of the looming threat that is Tom Brady, able to turn the tables at a moment’s notice.
“Tom, he plays the position better than anyone ever and he’s definitely the G.O.A.T. from what I’ve seen, but I don’t say that just because he has won Super Bowls. I say it because of how he plays the position,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said about the quarterback Wednesday. “The dude looks the exact same…He does when he comes off injuries and I think he’s playing as good now and throwing the ball as well now as I’ve seen anybody ever do it.”
