It’s TIMEEEEEE fight fans, for UFC 284: Islam Makhachev vs. Alexander Volkanovski.
While the rest of the world has their eyes set on the main event in Australia, here at Sactown Sports we choose to shine a little light on the co-main event between Yair Rodríguez and Sacramento’s own Josh Emmett.
This bout will be for the interim UFC featherweight championship, as the current title holder, Volkanovski, will be fighting for the lightweight belt this weekend. Heading into the weekend as a +150 underdog, Emmett will look to shock the world once again, getting a title for Team Alpha Male.
Fight Night will be live on ESPN and ESPN+ for the prelims starting at 5 p.m. PST Saturday, before switching over to ESPN+ PPV for the main card at 7 p.m. You can catch the fight on the ESPN App, costing $79.99 for the entire Pay-Per-View.

The Tale of the Tape
Josh Emmett and Yair “El Pantera” Rodríguez stack up quite evenly on paper.
Both heavy hitters, Emmett carries a record of 18-2 heading into the octagon this weekend, while Rodríguez holds a 15-3, 1 NC record. Coming off a split decision win of Calvin Kattar, Emmett will try to replicate his stellar striking against a tough Mexican opponent. Over his career, the Sacramento native has six TKO or KO victories in the cage, last doing so in 2019 to Mirsad Bektić.
In the other corner, Rodríguez hasn’t fought a full fight since his infamous bout with Max Holloway in 2021. last seeing the octagon in 2022, El Pantera’s fight was stopped in the first round when Brian Ortega suffered a significant shoulder injury. Leaving the fans disappointed, Rodríguez was named the winner of the fight due to stoppage.
Now facing off in a highly-anticipated bout, both men are fortunate for the opportunity, but see it as more of an eliminator match for Volkanovski’s next opponent at featherweight.
“In my eyes, there’s only one featherweight champion and that’s Alexander Volkanovski. So this is more like a No.1 contender belt,” Emmett said to the media this week.
