San Francisco 49ers fans worldwide have speculated whether quarterback Trey Lance would be able to return at any point this season, head coach Kyle Shanahan shot that notion down Wednesday.
Lance, 22, has been recovering from a fractured ankle he suffered in the first quarter of Week 2’s contest against the Seattle Seahawks. The team had initially stated that the North Dakota State product would be shelved for the duration of the 2022 season, but recent events had resurfaced the topic after he was spotted walking without a boot during the Mexico City game.
A topic that now remains the status quo at this moment in time.

“I haven’t been told there’s a chance [Lance could return]. Things would have to be pretty drastic,” Shanahan told the media Wednesday prior to practice.
The coach elaborated further, saying the young gunslinger remains on schedule in his recovery, resuming traveling with the team, and is now participating in all team meetings leading up to game day. Trey Lance is still expected to make a full recovery for the start of the 2023 training camp.
San Francisco is still without their top two defensive linemen as Arik Armstead and Javon Kinlaw did not return to the practice field Wednesday.
Armstead has been dealing with foot and ankle injuries that have kept him out since halfway through Week 4 against the LA Rams. While Kinlaw is still dealing with fluid build-up in his surgically-repaired knee. Both players currently have undefined timetables for a return, but the team’s three-week home stand does aid in their efforts.
Defensive end Samson Ebukam was also limited Wednesday after missing the last two games with a quadriceps injury. Left tackle Trent Williams was held out for rest reasons after the team returned early Tuesday morning from Mexico City.
