The Las Vegas Raiders go into their Bye Week sitting at 5-7 and an interim coach.
Antonio Pierce has led the Silver & Black to a 2-2 record since taking over for Josh McDaniels halfway through the 2023 season.
“I got five weeks. Get right. If I don’t get right, I’ll have a lot more time off, 52 weeks. I can do the math,” Pierce joked.
As we get closer to the end of the season, names are starting to pop up of who could take over the Silver & Black if owner Mark Davis decides to move on from Pierce.
According to Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, former Stanford head coach David Shaw is a name “to keep an eye on.” Currently without a team, Shaw coached the Cardinals from 2011 – 22, amassing a 96-54 record.
Shaw’s NFL coaching career began in 1997 when he joined the Philadelphia Eagles as their offensive quality control coach. After one year in Philadelphia, he joined the Raiders’ organization, taking on the same role from 1998-2000. In 2001, Shaw became the Raiders’ quarterback coach.

Another name that’s come up is former head coach Jon Gruden. According to Sports Illustrated’s Hondo Carpenter, if Gruden is willing to drop his lawsuit against the NFL, the league would give his return a “passive nod” of approval.
“I am going to tell you there are a lot of people who feel that Mark Davis, more than [Tom] Brady and Jim Gray, the person he trusts the most is Jon Gruden and would love to bring him back.”
Gruden initially coached the Raiders from 1998 – 2001. In a rare trade involving a head coach, the Raiders sent Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he led the team to a Super Bowl in 2003.
In 2018, Jon Gruden returned to the Raiders organization, signing a 10-year $100 million contract. However, his second tenure did not last long, as he resigned as head coach in 2021 following reports of emails sent by Gruden that contained racist and misogynistic language.
