Jimmy Garoppolo is the latest Raider to enter the NFL’s concussion protocol.
That news came from coach Josh McDaniels on Monday as he addressed the media.
The news might be a surprise to some because Garoppolo did not leave Sunday’s game. He finished the game for Las Vegas with 324 passing yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions. And with 12 seconds remaining on the clock for Las Vegas, Garoppolo was intercepted by Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Levi Wallace.
McDaniels said he wasn’t sure if it was a specific hit that led to placing Garoppolo in the league’s concussion protocol or if it was a cumulation of Sunday’s game. The Raiders’ quarterback was sacked four times and hit an additional eight.
“There was nothing ever mentioned or talked about, relative to that,” McDaniels said. “There was never a conversation about that, so I’m not sure exactly.”
Wide receiver Jakobi Meyers missed Week 2 because he was in the concussion protocol, but returned Sunday. He finished the day with seven catches for 84 yards.
McDaniels went on to say the team will prepare both backups, veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O’Connell, if Jimmy Garoppolo is not able to progress through the protocol. The Raiders travel to Los Angeles to take on the Chargers in Week 4.
“We’ll be hard at work to manage that situation as best we can as it progresses through the week,” McDaniels said.
