The Sacramento Kings announced on Monday that they have signed former UC Davis standout forward Chima Moneke to a contract for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
Terms of Moneke’s contract were not disclosed within Sacramento’s press release, but it’s believed that the 26-year-old has signed an Exhibit 10 contract and will have a chance to battle for a roster spot come training camp in September.
Moneke, a 6’6 forward from Canberra, Australia, averaged 16.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 0.9 steals per game during two seasons (2016-18) with the UC Davis Aggies. After two successful seasons in Davis, the forward has played basketball overseas, most recently playing for Bàsquet Manresa, a Spanish club that competes in the Liga ACB.
During the 2021-22 season with Bàsquet Manresa, Moneke posted averages of 14.8 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 53 percent from the field over 34 appearances.
During Tuesday morning’s edition of The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross, Sactown Sports 1140’s UC Davis play-by-play broadcaster Scott Marsh joined the show to break down Moneke’s game, reflect on the forward’s tenure with the Aggies and contemplate what he can bring to this Kings team that has sorely lacked a defensive identity.
Topics discussed:
- Moneke “never lost the belief” that he would get to the NBA
- Evaluating Moneke’s strengths and weaknesses as a player
- Which position(s) can Moneke play?
- How did Moneke perform during UC Davis’ NCAA Tournament matchup against the Kansas Jayhawks?
- Expectations for the Kings next season
