Matt Maiocco, San Francisco 49ers reporter for NBC Sports Bay Area, joined Cattles and Ramie on Tuesday to talk about the coaching news that broke around the NFL and pontificated who the next starting quarterback for the 49ers could be next season.
Topics discussed include:
- How much will the absence of DeMeco Ryans impact the 49ers’ defense?
- Who are the top replacement candidates to fill the role of Defensive Coordinator?
- How possible is it that the 49ers swoop in and hire Vic Fangio away from the Miami Dolphins?
- “I know that back in 2017, Kyle Shanahan wanted to hire Vic Fangio as his Defensive Coordinator. He’s an admirer of Fangio and it would surprise me if they haven’t had those conversations and kind of figured out, both sides, which way they want to go with this.”
- Why Shanahan’s plan is to probably stick with people who run his system
- How close were the 49ers to riding Brock Purdy into the starting position next season?
- “I would say that Brock Purdy proved that he’s the quarterback of the future by being the quarterback of the present.”
- As of this point, Trey Lance is back this offseason and is running the first-team reps until Brock Purdy is ready to go.
- If veterans like Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers are viable options for the San Francisco 49ers.
