Does Brandon Aiyuk asking for a trade away from the 49ers mean it’ll happen? Matt Maiocco certainly doesn’t think so.
NBC Sports Bay Area 49ers insider Matt Maiocco joined The Drive Guys Thursday to break down what Aiyuk’s trade request means for San Francisco. They also discuss what’s changed between SF and Aiyuk in contract talks, what makes this situation different from previous players, and what the plan for the Red & Gold is one the nest few years.
Plus: Matt breaks down why a Brandon Aiyuk trade at this point in the offseason makes little sense for the 49ers.
Listen to The Drive Guys from 2 – 6 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday, on Sactown Sports 1140.

More on 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk
Brandon Aiyuk, 26, has been in a contract saga with the Red & Gold since the conclusion of the 2023 season. The Rocklin native posted career numbers last season, making his first All-Pro team. He also finished first in yards per catch (18.3) in the NFL.
The 49ers have a history of closing deals leading into training camp (Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa). Many signs pointed to the same outcome with Aiyuk and his agents this offseason.
Reports indicated a deal was near completion at the end of April and May. But then things changed, with the WR market exploding around the 49ers. That, in turn, led to a change of heart by Aiyuk, who sought market value for his talents.
Currently, both sides are at an impasse, with the Red & Gold unwilling to meet their players’ demands.
