Maury Brown, senior writer at Forbes and a member of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, joined Kyle Draper and Kevin “Whitey” Gleason talk to about his recent interview with Oakland Athletics president Dave Kaval, the latest news on the team’s ballpark in Las Vegas following the release of new renderings and more.
In his interview with the A’s president, Kaval compares the latest stadium renderings and the development in Las Vegas to Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
“For those who haven’t really followed this thing, it’s an extraordinary statement [because] that ballpark is considered to be one of the crown jewels ever built in all of sports,” Brown said. “I actually do like the design, now whether they pull it all off, I don’t know. But I thought fitting it into nine acres, it’s okay, it’s not too bad, it’s more modern. But the idea that it would be that transcendent, it reminds me more of what the Marlins did.”
Brown notes his interview with Kaval got crazier from there. The A’s president also added how the relocation of the Oakland Athletics franchise is like the Dodgers moving from Brooklyn to Los Angeles.
“I thought he was trolling at that stage. If you go back to 1957 when the Giants and the Dodgers both moved out there, there were not teams west of the Rockies and only a handful of teams west of the Mississippi [River],” Brown said. ”
Additional topics discussed include:
- How the A’s are going from a top-10 market to Las Vegas, where there are plenty of entertainment opportunities already established.
- The front office is “massively overselling” the A’s move to Las Vegas
- Why isn’t the team changing its name and colors with the relocation?
- The move to Las Vegas is in a “too big to fail” state
- It’s a matter of when not if, John Fisher will sell the team
