The new Kings GM joined the show to discuss the offseason and share his excitement for the upcoming season
This week on The Carmichael Dave Show with JayMarzz, newly-hired Sacramento Kings general manager Monte McNair joined the show to discuss the roster moves made this offseason.
McNair, who spent the last 13 seasons within the Houston Rockets organization, accepted the position of general manager in September.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NBA will begin the 2020-21 preseason next Friday, December 11th. With the NBA Finals ending in October and the draft taking place just two weeks ago, McNair only had about 10 days to conduct free agency and build a roster.
As of Tuesday morning, the following players have been signed for the 2020-21 season:
- Hassan Whiteside – Center (7’0, 265 lbs)
- Frank Kaminsky – Power Forward/Center (7’0, 240 lbs)
- DaQuan Jeffries – Shooting Guard/Small Forward (6’5, 230 lbs)
- Glenn Robinson III – Small Forward (6’6, 222 lbs)
- Chimezie Metu – Center/Power Forward (6’9, 225 lbs)
McNair shared his enthusiasm towards the moves, citing that he and his front office staff are excited for the start of training camp this week.
“It’s certainly been crazy, it’s kind of like we hit the simulate offseason button in NBA 2K or something,” McNair said of the quick turnaround. “We’re excited where things are at and ready to see what they look like actually on the floor.”
Fan-favorite Harry Giles III departed the franchise for a deal with the Portland Train Blazers last week. McNair shed some light on the process of the negotiations:
“Harry is certainly a fan-favorite and I think that he did some good things here in Sacramento. For us, we evaluated him along with the rest of the free agent class and he is certainly a talent. We wish him the best in Portland, but ultimately how things shook out, we were excited to add the guys we did,” he said.
“Especially Hassan (Whiteside) brings just a different dimension at the center spot. Obviously we thank Harry for all that he did. I know that the Sacramento fans love him, but ultimately we just ended up going in a different direction.”
Over the span of the interview with Dave, McNair goes on to breakdown the process of deciding on matching Bogdan Bogdanovic’s offer sheet, share his thoughts on rookie Tyrese Haliburton, emphasize how important it was to lock in the De’Aaron Fox extension and much more.
