With Mitchell sitting out, Sacramento will not have any representation at NBA All-Star Weekend

Sacramento Kings guard Davion Mitchell will not play in Friday night’s Rising Stars Game at All-Star Weekend due to right hand soreness, per a release from the NBA.

Denver’s Bones Hyland is set to replace Mitchell on the Team Payton roster that will be coached by Hall of Fame guard Gary Payton.

Mitchell missed Wednesday’s game in Chicago due to the ailment, but Kings head coach Alvin Gentry said pregame that the injury isn’t one that the team and its trainers are concerned about.

“I don’t know about (Mitchell missing) the Rising Stars game, it isn’t anything that anyone is really worried about,” Gentry said of the injury on Wednesday. “It’s just a little contusion that he has and in any really, really important situation, he would have played tonight, but it doesn’t make sense.

Prior to missing Wednesday’s game in Chicago, the rookie guard has been on a tear over the past three weeks.

Since January 26th, Mitchell is averaging 16.1 points, 2.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 45-percent from the field and just under 40-percent from three-point range.

After struggling offensively to begin the season, the 23-year-old is now shooting over 40-percent from the field and 32-percent from beyond the arc on the year.

With a full week off to get his hand right, Mitchell and the rest of the Kings will benefit from the All-Star break to rest up for a final postseason push.

The Kings have 22 games remaining on the regular season schedule and Sacramento is currently in a 3.5-game hole as they chase the 10th-seed spot in the Western Conference standings.

They’ll need all hands on deck if they want to play meaningful games down the stretch–especially their talented rookie in Mitchell.
