Countless people around baseball already held reservations about the Oakland Athletics’ relocation to Las Vegas, and many on the fence could soon sway in a similar direction.
According to Mick Akers of The Las Vegas Review-Journal, the cost of the A’s planned ballpark has increased by a quarter billion dollars, raising the projected price tag to $1.75 billion.
The A’s are responsible for all cost overruns, which adds another layer to the situation. The notoriously penny-pinching ownership group headed by John Fisher will be on the hook for more expenses as the franchise also focuses on upgrading Sutter Health Park, its new, temporary home in Sacramento, to Major League standards.

The stadium’s projected $1.5 billion price tag has risen to $1.75 billion because of inflation and the addition of 70,000 square feet of ballpark features. New elements added during the stadium’s design phase include more clubs and suites, upgraded general admission spaces and player amenities. The A’s Las Vegas ballpark will be the first in Major League Baseball to offer under-seat cooling.
“The increase in the budget is due to combination of adding a variety of features to the ballpark along with general increases in construction costs,” A’s executive Sandy Dean told the Review-Journal. “The design process is iterative, and has been allowing us to add elements to the ballpark intended to make this a premier facility for Major League Baseball.”
All recent and potential future cost increases are the responsibility of the A’s.

According to Akers, plans call for construction on the A’s 33,000-fan-capacity stadium to begin in the spring and be ready for the team to begin play in Las Vegas in 2028.

More on the A’s in Sacramento
Before kicking off the inaugural season of their temporary relocation to Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento in 2025, the Athletics are utilizing the holidays as an opportunity to integrate into their new community by participating in multiple events throughout the area.
To celebrate the club’s arrival to town at the 16th annual holiday tree lighting ceremony in Old Sacramento, the city has enlisted A’s mascot Stomper to lead this year’s countdown to light the giant tree situated along the waterfront. The event – taking place the day before Thanksgiving on Wednesday – features community favorites such as the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus and Sac Dance Lab and guest speaking moments from elected officials. The tree is artfully decorated by Stage Nine Exhibits using nearly 24,000 lights, 550 icicles, 400 strobes and other specialty lights.
The A’s have also teamed up with Downtown Sacramento to present Free Skate Days this winter at the Downtown Sacramento Ice Rink, which sits just a few blocks away from Sutter Health Park. For three special afternoons on Nov. 30, Dec. 28 and Jan. 18 from noon to 2 p.m. PT, the first 300 people to arrive at the ice rink can skate for free.
