After a thrilling–then heartbreaking–MLB debut that ended with a trip to the injured list, Oakland Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson appears to be heading back to the show.
Wilson, who has been on the 10-day injured list since July 20th due to a left hamstring strain, will likely join the A’s on their six-game road trip that will begin on Tuesday in Cincinnati.
The talented infielder quickly picked up a hit in his first MLB at-bat in July before having to depart the game moments later due to a left hamstring strain, but it looks as if Wilson will get a more extended look at the big-league level during the final month of the regular season.
Following Sunday’s win over the Milwaukee Brewers, Oakland optioned infielder Darrell Hernaiz to AAA Las Vegas to make room on the active roster for Wilson.

More on A’s prospect Jacob Wilson
Wilson singled in his first MLB at-bat in the third inning of July 19th’s 13-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, but he began limping as he approached home plate as he scored on Lawrence Butler’s triple. The young infielder was removed from the game and placed on the injured list the following day.
“It was pretty horrible,” Wilson said of exiting his MLB debut due to injury. “This is a day you work for your entire life and look forward to for a long time. I had three innings and got the base hit, which was the high moment of my life.”
According to MLB Pipeline, Wilson, 22, is the No. 26 overall prospect in baseball. He was Oakland’s first pick of the draft last year, going sixth overall, and earned a quick promotion by hitting .401 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs in 284 minor league at-bats bridging the 2023 and ’24 seasons.
It’s been a successful rehab assignment for Wilson, who is batting .391 with five RBI and just two strikeouts over seven games.
Now, we’ll see what the A’s top prospect can do in a larger sample size at the Major League level.
