On the heels of a scorching summer in the Sacramento Valley, the Oakland Athletics and Major League Baseball believe they have found a way to avoid the heat in 2025.
The A’s have released the first pitch times for all 81 home games that will take place at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento next season–the first of at least three seasons in California’s capital city.
Of the A’s 81 home games, 60 will occur at night (7:05 pm PT). 11 of the 21 day games will take place in cooler months, April and May, leaving just six Sunday day games during the summer months (June-August).
This is MLB’s attempt to navigate the brutal Sacramento summer temperatures and ensure that the bulk of these home games are played in comfortable conditions. Of course, a lot of work remains in ensuring that Sutter Health Park, home to the AAA Sacramento River Cats, is up to major-league standards by March, but the night-game-heavy schedule is a start.

More on the Oakland Athletics relocation to Sacramento
Following a record-setting summer in Sacramento, Major League Baseball has reversed its decision to install artificial turf at Sutter Health Park.
According to The Athletic‘s Evan Drellich, the A’s new home stadium will feature a natural grass playing surface after player concerns were raised regarding the harsh summer temperatures.
Although the A’s and AAA Sacramento River Cats will share a field next season–one that will see 156 games played at Sutter Health Park over a 180-day period–MLB has opted to play it safe with the natural grass. League commissioner Rob Manfred has previously stated that there are plans for more night games than day games in Sacramento to avoid the harsh conditions of 100-plus degree gamedays.
The A’s will play the next three seasons in California’s capital city as they wait for construction to be completed on a planned new ballpark on the Las Vegas strip. If the park is not completed by 2027, the A’s could remain in Sacramento for the 2028 season as well.
