Sliding Giants seek better pitching against Diamondbacks

Entering play on Friday night, the San Francisco Giants were one of the hottest teams in baseball.
After winning 12 of their past 17 games, the Giants had pulled its record back over .500 after spending the bulk of the season multiple games under the mark. A series against the MLB-best New York Yankees was viewed as a test for a surging San Francisco lineup–but that test was failed.
New York dominated the three-game series, winning each game thanks to massive performances from MVP candidates Aaron Judge and Juan Soto–the latter delivering a go-ahead home run off of Camilo Doval in the ninth inning of Sunday’s series finale at Oracle Park.
Not only did the Yankees defeat San Francisco’s top three in the rotation–Logan Webb, Jordan Hicks, and Blake Snell–but they did so while hitting .280 as a team and scoring 6.7 runs per contest.

Giants pitching has hit a wall as of late, allowing six runs or more over the past four games (all losses) against the Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies.
Not only did San Francisco lose all three games to New York, but they also lost reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, who exited Sunday’s game due to a tight left groin. The injury could be a flare up of Snell’s recent left adductor strain that sidelined him for more than a month earlier this season.
Giants manager Bob Melvin told reporters that he expects Snell to be placed on the 15-day injured list and that the southpaw will undergo imaging on the injury before San Francisco’s game in Arizona on Monday.
Pitching is thin for the Giants at the moment, with injured starters Alex Cobb (hip) and Robbie Ray (Tommy John surgery recovery) not expected to return until July and Keaton Winn (forearm strain) also sidelined–although Winn is close to a return.
Erik Miller is expected to get the start for San Francisco on Monday as the Giants look to snap a four-game losing skid.
