The San Francisco Giants are in the midst of a critical offseason, and first-year president of baseball operations Buster Posey isn’t going to make any knee-jerk transactions.
After signing free agent shortstop Willy Adames to a seven-year $182 million deal–the largest guaranteed deal in Giants franchise history–Posey and his front office are canvassing the MLB’s Winter Meetings in Dallas, Texas for more roster upgrades.
While San Francisco is reportedly interested in acquiring a starting pitcher, they are also receiving interest in some players currently on their active roster.
According to The San Francisco Chronicle‘s Susan Slusser, there is a high level of league interest in 2023 All-Star closer Camilo Doval.
More on Giants closer Camilo Doval
Camilo Doval, a hard-throwing right-hander with a nasty slider, made his first All-Star team while leading the National League with 39 saves and a 2.93 ERA during the 2023 season.
2024 did not go as well for the 27-year-old.
Over 62 appearances, Doval pitched to a 4.88 ERA while walking a career-worst 39 batters over 59 innings. The Giants briefly sent Doval down to Triple-A Sacramento in August in hopes of instilling confidence in the closer, but he posted a 5.40 ERA over his final 16 showings after being recalled.
Doval struggled in 2024, but when asked about the four-year veteran, Posey voiced confidence in opening the season with Doval on the 25-man roster.
“I want to say on Doval, I’m pretty bullish on him coming back,” Posey said of the All-Star closer, per NBC Sports’ Alex Pavlovic.
“This guy has got the potential to be a lockdown piece. We’ve seen it, right? He’s got nearly 100 saves in the big leagues and that doesn’t happen by accident. I’m excited to have a chance to talk with him. Obviously, getting to catch him, I know the personality a little bit. I have belief in him being important for us.”
Anything is possible at the MLB Winter Meetings, but it appears that Posey and his staff are looking to add–not-subtract–in hopes pf ending a multi-year postseason drought.
