Following an 80-82 season that resulted in a third-straight season without a postseason appearance, the San Francisco Giants have parted ways with team president Farhan Zaidi, per NBC Sports’ Alex Pavlovic.

The Giants will move former catcher and current member of San Francisco ownership Buster Posey into Zaidi’s role as team president.

Zaidi, 47, had one more guaranteed season on his deal, but the Giants are changing things up as the franchise looks to solidify itself back in the mix of postseason contenders.

“We have made the decision to part ways with Farhan Zaidi,” Giants chairman Greg Johnson said in a statement Monday. “We appreciate Farhan’s commitment to the organization and his passion for making an impact in our community during his six years with the Giants. Ultimately, the results have not been what we had hoped, and while that responsibility is shared by all of us, we have decided that a change is necessary. While these decisions are not easy, we believe it is time for new leadership to elevate our team so we can consistently contend for championships. I wish Farhan and his family nothing but the best moving forward.

“As we look ahead, I’m excited to share that Buster Posey will now take on a greater role as the new President of Baseball Operations. We are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead this franchise’s baseball philosophy and we feel that Buster is the perfect fit. Buster has the demeanor, intelligence and drive to do this job, and we are confident that he and Bob Melvin will work together to bring back winning baseball to San Francisco.

More on the SF Giants move to promote Buster Posey

Following a 12-year playing career that featured three World Series titles, Buster Posey hung up his cleats following the 2021 season.

The 37-year-old joined the San Francisco Giants ownership group in 2022, where he has served on the board of directors over the past two seasons.

After reports surfaced that Posey was at the forefront of negotiations surrounding third baseman Matt Chapman’s recent extension, the writing appeared to be on the wall for Zaidi, who had fallen under heavy scrutiny in recent years as the Giants compiled records of 81-81, 79-83, and 80-82 following a historic 2021 season that saw the club finish with a record of 107-55.

His comments during the MLB’s annual meetings in Arizona last week seemed to point to the inevitable split between person and organization.

“Anytime you have a disappointing season, it’s my job to evaluate everything in my purview, and it’s their job to evaluate everything in my purview, plus me. And so I think that process is happening, and I understand it,” Zaidi said to the media in Phoenix last week.

Now a week later, the decision has been made to part ways and move in a different direction for all parties.
