At a time when the 2024 MLB regular season is currently hanging in the balance, the San Francisco Giants have sputtered at an unideal time.

After a strong push out of the All-Star break that saw San Francisco win 14 of 21 games, the Giants have dropped seven of their past twelve games, including three of their past four contests to drop themselves further out of the National League Wild Card picture.

San Francisco’s 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday acted as salt in an open wound, handing the Giants their second one-run defeat in a 72-hour period.

With the regular season winding down, time is beginning to run out for San Francisco (66-66) as teams ahead of them in the NL Wild Card standings start to create space between those behind them in the chase for October baseball.

Following another eventful weekend of Major League Baseball action, here’s an updated look at the NL Wild Card standings.

With just 30 games remaining on the regular season schedule, time is of the essence for the San Francisco Giants’ 2024 playoff hopes.

Not only is time a factor, but the upcoming schedule will not be doing the Giants any favors. According to Tankathon, San Francisco owns the most difficult remaining schedule in all of Major League Baseball.

As for those ahead of the Giants in the NL Wild Card standings, Arizona (5th), Atlanta (15th), and San Diego (22nd) have more accessible paths to securing a spot in the National League’s six-team playoff mix.

San Francisco will only face one more team that holds a sub-.500 record for the rest of the season–the Miami Marlins this coming weekend at home. Outside of a series against the Marlins, there are no ‘”gimme” matchups on the schedule. If the Giants want to punch their tickets to October, they will have to earn that shot convincingly.

Meetings with the Arizona Diamondbacks (6 games) and San Diego Padres (6 games) will likely make or break San Francisco’s NL Wild Card chances. If the Giants remain in the mix until next week, back-to-back series against the D-Backs and Padres could spice things up for these three NL West foes.

What is the upcoming San Francisco Giants Schedule?

  • Tuesday, August 27th – Thursday, August 29th – @ Milwaukee Brewers
  • Friday, August 30th – Sunday, September 1st – vs. Miami Marlins
  • Tuesday, September 3rd – Thursday, September 5th – vs. Arizona Diamondbacks
  • Friday, September 6th – Sunday, September 8th – @ San Diego Padres
  • Tuesday, September 10th-Thursday, September 12th – vs. Milwaukee Brewers
