Things certainly looked bleak for the San Francisco Giants at the start of August. Less than two weeks later, they are right in the thick of the National League Wild Card race.

Thanks to a 7-3 start to August, the Giants (61-59) are within 1.5 games of the third and final NL Wild Card spot with 42 games remaining on the regular season schedule. San Francisco has 12 of its last 16 games to pull itself out of a nearly five-game hole in the postseason picture.

With plenty of baseball still left to be played, where do the Giants currently fit in the NL Wild Card standings? Let’s take a look.

The Giants have navigated a softer portion of its schedule by going from six games under the .500 mark to two games over, but things will only get more challenging from here.

San Francisco holds the fifth-hardest remaining strength of schedule in the National League (eight-hardest in Major League Baseball), although teams around them in the NL Wild Card standings like St. Louis (2nd), Cincinnati (4th), and Pittsburgh (sixth) all have difficult schedules ahead of them.

Luckily for the Giants, they will be able to somewhat control their own destiny as they will face several teams around them in the coming weeks, starting with a crucial four-game set against the Atlanta Braves at Oracle Park that will begin this afternoon.

Here are some key series that San Francisco fans will want to circle on their calendars:

  • August 12-15th: vs. Braves (4 games)
  • September 3-5th: vs. D-Backs (3 games)
  • September 6-8th: @ Padres (3 games)
  • September 13-15th: vs. Padres (3 games)
  • September 23-25th: @ D-Backs (3 games)
  • September 27-29th: vs. Cardinals (3 games)

Buckle up, Giants fans. It’s going to be a rollercoaster of a final stretch.
