After signing the biggest contract in San Francisco Giants history, shortstop Willy Adames held his introductory press conference Thursday afternoon in the Bay Area.

The first question from reporters was about the new President of Baseball Operations, Buster Posey, and the impact he had on Adames’s offseason decision.

“I think that was the biggest reason that I’m here,” Adames said. “What he accomplished here as a player was such a dream, and I was growing up when I was watching that, but it was such a great run. Those championships were amazing.”

“For me, it looked like they had a family here. The group of guys that they have was such an amazing group, it looks like and I want to be with something like that while I’m here. So, I think he’s going to bring the right guys to the clubhouse and then it’s going to be up to us to do what they did as players, but I’m really excited just to be the guy here for him and just to try to help him create that winning culture here again. I’m excited for Bob (Melvin). I used to play for him everyday and, like I said, they’re going to build the right team here and the right culture, so I’m really excited about that.”

He expressed his confidence that Posey would continue to bring the right talent into the clubhouse this offseason and for the seven years he had signed with the club. He’s also clearly optimistic about their current young players.

“They have a really talented group of young guys that I watched last year,” he said. “I think they could be superstars here.”

“Obviously, (Posey’s) not going to be done bringing guys here that can help us win, and I think with the talent that they have here in the system, we can accomplish really special things, and I’m really excited about that,” he continued. “I’m really thrilled with the guys that they have, the young guys that they have. I think they’re going to be superstars, and I want to be part of that.”

About new San Francisco Giants shortstop Willy Adames

Willy Adames, 29, just finished a career year with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024, during which the shortstop batted .251 and had 32 home runs (career-high), 112 RBI (career-high), 74 walks (career-high), and 21 stolen bases (career high) over 161 games.

Although he has never been named to an All-Star roster, the Dominican Republic product has mashed 20 or more home runs in five of his six MLB seasons (excluding the 60-game 2020 season).

With Adames at shortstop and five-time Gold Glove Award winner Matt Chapman slotted in at third base after recently signing a six-year, $151 million extension of his own, San Francisco’s infield is set up for the long haul.

Now, as the Winter Meetings get set to begin on Sunday in Dallas, Texas, Posey will look to make more splashy moves in hopes of upgrading a Giants roster that is seeking to return to the postseason for the first time since 2021.
