The San Francisco Giants have turned a corner, winning eight of its last 12 games to remain alive in the National League Wild Card race, but they will be without Wilmer Flores for the remainder of the stretch run.
Flores will miss the remainder of the 2024 season due to a knee injury. The veteran has been experiencing right knee tendonitis and underwent a Tenex procedure on Wednesday, which will sideline him for the rest of the year.
It’s been a frustrating 2024 season for Flores, who batted just .206 with four home runs and 26 RBI—all career lows (minimum 70 games played) in limited appearances due to multiple stints on the injured list.

More on Wilmer Flores & the SF Giants
“It obviously affected what he was doing this year,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said of Flores on Wednesday in Washington D.C.
“This is a guy who last year led the team in home runs and was about as clutch a guy as you could possibly have. He was fighting it all year, and unfortunately, we’re going to lose him for the rest of the year, which isn’t ideal, but hopefully, he’s 100 percent next year. I think he’s got an option with us next year, and hopefully, he’s back.
“He’s someone that I’ve really admired from the other side in the past and he has a ton of leadership qualities here. Still, even though he’s not here, he’s checking in and telling me to keep it rolling, all of the things you’d expect out of a leader. He’s a stud.”
As Melvin alluded to, this may not be the last time we see Flores don a Giants uniform. The 33-year-old holds a $3.5 million player option (San Francisco also has a $8.5 million team option for Flores that they will likely decline) for the 2025 season.
In the meantime, LaMonte Wade Jr. will continue to hold things down at first base, while the recently acquired Mark Canha will also see time in the role that Flores is leaving behind.
The Giants (57-58) are picking up steam at an ideal time, as they currently sit 4.5 games behind the third and final National League Wild Card spot with 47 games remaining.
