Athletics part ways with GM David Forst following 11-year partnership

The Athletics are making a significant change at the top of their baseball operations department, announcing Friday that general manager David Forst and the organization have mutually agreed to part ways after nearly three decades together.

Assistant general manager Dan Feinstein has been named interim general manager for the remainder of the 2026 season while the Athletics begin a comprehensive search for their next full-time baseball operations leader.

Forst’s departure closes a remarkable 27-year run with the franchise. He joined the Athletics as a scout in 2000 before being promoted to assistant general manager in 2004, replacing Paul DePodesta.

More on the Athletics’ GM change

Widely respected around baseball, Forst declined opportunities to interview for general manager openings with both the Seattle Mariners and San Diego Padres before ultimately succeeding Billy Beane as the Athletics’ general manager following the 2015 season, when Beane transitioned into the role of executive vice president of baseball operations.

The front-office shakeup comes during another disappointing season for the Athletics. Despite boasting one of the American League’s brightest young cores, the club has been unable to translate its talent into sustained success.

Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Nick Kurtz has emerged as one of baseball’s premier young sluggers, Jacob Wilson has developed into an All-Star shortstop, Tyler Soderstrom continues to establish himself as a middle-of-the-order bat, and Shea Langeliers remains one of the club’s foundational players behind the plate.

However, the promising young nucleus has not been enough to reverse the franchise’s fortunes. The Athletics are headed toward a sixth consecutive season without a postseason appearance while continuing to navigate a transitional period off the field.

The organization is currently playing its second of three seasons in Sacramento before its planned relocation to Las Vegas, where construction on a new $1.75 billion ballpark is expected to be completed in time for the 2028 season.

Athletics owner and managing partner John Fisher thanked Forst for his years of service and the impact he made on the organization.

“David has been an integral part of the A’s and our success for nearly three decades,” Fisher said. “His leadership, dedication, and commitment to this team have helped shape our baseball operations department and position us for the future. We are grateful for everything David has done for our organization.”

Forst also reflected on his time with the franchise, expressing appreciation for the people he worked alongside throughout his career.

“It was truly an honor to spend the last 27 years with the A’s, especially the last 11 as the GM,” Forst said. “This organization is full of incredibly talented, devoted, and good people, and I am lucky to have worked alongside them for so long.”

Feinstein will oversee baseball operations through the remainder of the season as the Athletics evaluate candidates for the permanent position.

The decision marks the end of one of the longest-tenured front-office careers in franchise history and signals a new direction for an organization hoping to pair its talented young roster with sustained success as it prepares for its eventual move to Las Vegas.
