A’s promote No. 3 prospect Gage Jump to make MLB debut

The Athletics have selected left-handed pitcher Gage Jump from Triple-A Las Vegas and placed right-handed pitcher Aaron Civale on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder tendonitis, the club announced today.

Additionally, outfielder Denzel Clarke has been transferred to the 60-day injured list, clearing space on the 40-man roster.

Jump, scheduled to start tonight’s game, will be making his Major League debut. In doing so, he will become the 181st pitcher in Athletics history to start in his debut, the first since Mason Barnett last year on Aug. 30.

The left-hander was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for his performance last week, in which he pitched 7.0 scoreless innings, striking out nine batters in the process. Overall, he is 0-2 with a 4.50 ERA and .773 opponents OPS in nine starts with the Aviators. Jump is the A’s No. 3 overall prospect, according to MLB.com.

Civale started last night’s matchup against Seattle, allowing seven runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.0 innings. He opened the season 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in his first nine starts, but allowed 12 runs over 9.0 innings across his last two starts. Overall, he is 5-2 with a 4.20 ERA in 11 starts this season.

Clarke was initially placed on the 10-day injured list on April 22 with a mid-foot bone bruise in his right foot. After going on a rehab assignment to Triple-A Las Vegas, he was returned from rehab due to a significant left hamstring strain. Clarke was on the A’s Opening Day roster and hit .170 (9-for-53) with one double, six RBI, four walks, two stolen bases, and 24 strikeouts.
