The San Francisco Giants placed star first baseman Rafael Devers on the 60-day injured list with an injured core muscle on Sunday.

The move ends Devers’ season, with surgery for the injury likely to occur in the coming days. He’ll be meeting with doctors for a consultation on Monday.

Outfielder Scott Bandura will be Devers’ roster replacement, moving up from Triple-A Sacramento.

The Giants said in a release that Devers “has managed this issue for much of the season and chose to keep playing through it.”

The 29-year-old Devers is a three-time All-Star and a two-time Silver Slugger who helped the Boston Red Sox win the 2018 World Series.

Despite the injury, Devers has knocked in 98 RBIs, slammed 37 home runs and hit an MLB-leading 36 doubles on a .258 batting average this season. The 37 home runs are the second-highest total of his career.

Devers, who has batted as the designated hitter in recent games, has 100 appearances at first base this season and 48 at DH.

Bandura, 25, is a former seventh-round draft pick who will be making his major league debut. He batted .320 with 13 homers and 94 RBIs during stops with Triple-A Sacramento and Double-A Richmond this season.
