A’s SS Jacob Wilson to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery

The A’s will be without one of their most important young players for the foreseeable future, as Jacob Wilson is set to undergo surgery on his left shoulder.

Wilson has been on the 10-day injured list since August 17 after suffering a left shoulder subluxation. The 2025 All-Star is scheduled to undergo surgery on Sept. 9 with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache to address instability in the shoulder.

The procedure will bring an early end to what was shaping up to be another promising season for Wilson, who has appeared in just 80 games. The shortstop was hitting .266 with seven home runs and 37 RBI, continuing to establish himself as a key piece of the A’s young core.

The timing is particularly unfortunate for an A’s team that has struggled mightily since a strong start to the season.

The A’s entered May with a 17-14 record and appeared to have the potential to remain competitive in the American League. Since then, however, the A’s have gone just 36-71, dropping more than 30 games below .500 and putting themselves on track for a sixth consecutive season without a postseason appearance.

Injuries have played a significant role in the team’s struggles. Along with Wilson, Tyler Soderstrom, Shea Langeliers, Luis Severino and Brent Rooker have all missed significant time this season, leaving the A’s without several of their most important contributors for extended stretches.

Wilson’s absence now adds another major blow to an organization hoping its young core can eventually lead it back to contention.

For the A’s, the immediate focus will be on getting Wilson healthy and ready for the 2027 season.

At just 24 years old, Jacob Wilson remains one of the most important building blocks for the franchise, making his recovery from shoulder surgery a significant storyline heading into the offseason.
