A’s place ace Luis Severino (shoulder strain) on Injured List

Severino exited his start against the New York Yankees after just one inning, surrendering four unearned runs before experiencing discomfort while warming up for the second inning.

The move comes as the Athletics are already navigating injuries in their rotation (Aaron Civale and Gunnar Hoglund), further testing the club’s depth.

“The initial finding is, it’s definitely a shoulder strain,” manager Mark Kotsay said. “When medical gets the full report back, they’ll release a statement that is more specific to the injury.”

More on Luis Severino

Despite the season-long numbers, Luis Severino had recently found a groove. The right-hander holds a 2-6 record with a 4.16 ERA in 12 starts this year, though he posted a 2.84 ERA across his last seven outings after struggling to a 6.20 ERA in his first five. His stretch of improved performance made him a stabilizing force atop the Athletics’ rotation prior to the injury.

The injury also adds to a body of work that has been uneven since his arrival in Sacramento. Severino is in the second season of a three-year, $67 million deal, which includes a $22 million player option for 2027, and has gone 10-17 with a 4.43 ERA over 41 starts with the club since the beginning of the 2025 season.

In a corresponding move, the Athletics recalled right-hander Michael Kelly from Triple-A Las Vegas. Kelly began the season on the Opening Day roster, posting a 6.23 ERA in four appearances before being optioned on April 9.

At Triple-A, he went 1-0 with two saves, a 4.91 ERA, and a .779 opponents’ OPS over 13 relief outings, striking out 17 across 14.2 innings without allowing a home run.

Kotsay emphasized that the team will need a collective response in Severino’s absence.

“It’s tough,” Kotsay said. “It’s not something that we haven’t experienced. Sevy missed a little bit of time last year as well. There’s plenty of adversity going around the game with different clubs. Someone has to step up and fill that role right now.

“It’s going to take everybody in that clubhouse to help this ballclub win. This is a prime example of that right now.”

With Luis Severino sidelined, the Athletics will look for internal solutions to stabilize their rotation and weather another early-season test as they look to remain competitive in a wide-open American League West race.
