Report: San Francisco Giants trade pitcher Alex Cobb to Cleveland

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the San Francisco Giants have traded right-handed pitcher Alex Cobb to the Cleveland Guardians.

The San Francisco Giants claim not to be sellers at the 2024 MLB trade deadline, but their actions have shown differently. On the day of the deadline, the Giants traded right-hander Alex Cobb to the Cleveland Guardians, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

This comes one day after Jorge Soler was traded to the Atlanta Braves, where he won the World Series MVP in 2021. According to recent reports, the team has no plan to move on from starting pitcher Blake Snell before the end of Tuesday’s deadline.

Alex Cobb has not played this season while recovering from hip surgery.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic, the Giants were aiming to create more opportunities for 22-year-old Hayden Birdsong. It is currently unclear what Cleveland sent in return.

Barring a surprise over the next three hours, Giants will go into the final third of season with a rotation of Webb, Snell, Ray, Harrison and Birdsong. It’s a very strong group, although there’s no longer much of a safety net if anyone gets hurt.

Currently four games behind the final Wild Card spot in the National League, with an easy schedule in the immediate future, it will be interesting to see how the Giants manage the remainder of their season.

With young talent on the roster, it may be time to embrace the next generation of Bay Area baseball.

The MLB trade deadline concludes at 3 p.m. PST. With roughly three hours remaining until then, San Francisco has sent off Jorge Soler and now, Alex Cobb.
