Rob Manfred eliminates Oracle Park as possible temporary home for A’s

The San Francisco Giants will not have to share Oracle Park with their Bay Area neighbors.

In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred spoke about the latest updates on where the Oakland A’s may play after this season. The team’s lease with the Coliseum expires after the 2024 season, forcing the Athletics to find a temporary home until their new ballpark in Las Vegas is built.

Oracle Park, once floated as a possibility, is not considered a likely spot for even a handful of A’s games next year or beyond, because of the complicated logistics of hosting two teams. The Coliseum is the only location that would ensure the A’s continue to receive their roughly $70 million annually from their NBC Sports Bay Area deal.

Last fall, A’s President Dave Kaval threw out the idea that Oracle could be a temporary home for the team.

If the team is unable to come to an agreement with city and county officials about extending its lease, then Triple-A ballparks in Sacramento (Sutter Health Park) and Salt Lake City (Smith’s Ballpark) could serve as the team’s temporary home. At the start of spring training, Manfred said he expects the 2025 schedule to be finalized by mid-summer, so the league needs to determine where the Athletics will play next year sooner rather than later.
