SF Giants Injury Updates: Chapman, Bader & more

The San Francisco Giants released a series of medical updates on Monday that could significantly impact the club’s direction over the next month.

Sitting at 38-52 and 10.5 games back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot, the Giants are approaching a pivotal stretch of the season.

If they fail to make up ground before the August 3 MLB trade deadline, the organization could be forced into seller mode.

San Francisco Giants Injury Updates: July 7, 2026

Among the most notable updates was Matt Chapman’s status. The Giants announced that Chapman, who has been sidelined with an abdominal strain, will rejoin the team and be re-evaluated.

Any positive news surrounding Chapman would be a welcome development for a lineup that has struggled for consistency during his absence.

The veteran third baseman remains one of the club’s most important players on both sides of the ball, and his return could provide a much-needed spark if San Francisco hopes to mount a second-half run.

Harrison Bader also appears to be making progress. Bader took batting practice on the field Monday and is scheduled to run the bases Tuesday while continuing all baseball activities.

His recovery from left plantar fasciitis is encouraging, especially for a team that has lacked production and stability in the outfield.

Not all of the San Francisco Giants’ injury updates were positive.

Reliever Matt Gage underwent an MRI for a left elbow strain and will be re-evaluated by team physician Dr. Ken Akizuki. Any elbow-related issue for a pitcher carries added concern, and the Giants will await the imaging results before determining next steps.

Meanwhile, Joel Peguero remains in Arizona as he recovers from a left hamstring strain and is scheduled to throw live batting practice Tuesday.

Catcher Daniel Susac has started his swing progression and is throwing out to 105 feet while preparing to begin a running program later this week.

Pitcher Jose Butto is also progressing, throwing four times per week out to 75 feet as he works back from right arm fatigue.

For a team fighting to stay relevant in the National League playoff picture, these medical updates arrive at a critical time. The Giants likely need a strong showing over the next few weeks to avoid becoming deadline sellers.

If Chapman and Bader can return quickly and contribute immediately, the San Francisco Giants may still have a chance to remain in the Wild Card conversation. If the losses continue to pile up, however, the front office could shift its focus from chasing October to reshaping the roster for 2027 and beyond.
